Cave Rescue Organisation
Encyclopedia
The Cave Rescue Organisation is based in the caving area of the Yorkshire Dales
in northern England
and was founded in 1935. Although it is staffed by volunteers and funded by donations, it is integrated into the emergency services and will be called out if the police are notified that there has been a caving incident. Often CRO doubles as local mountain rescue and frequently rescues sheep which have become stuck in caves or on crags.
CRO publishes an annual incident report.
The history of CRO was documented in the 1988 book Race Against Time a History of the Cave Rescue Organisation by Jim Eyre and John Frankland (ISBN 0950687448)
