Carthalo was acting as the garrison commander. It's possible this was a different Carthalo. When winning seemed impossible Carthalo laid down his weapons and tried to find Fabuis. Carthalo had a family tie to Fabius and was hoping to use it to secure his life. Carthalo was killed before he was able to appeal to Fabius.
