When the school was being named, there was some controversy over whether it should be named Carrboro High School or South Chapel Hill High School, as some parents feared that not including the "prestigious" name associated with the other Chapel Hill schools would hurt their children's chances when applying to college. In addition, there was some debate about its name considering that most of Carrboro High's students come from Chapel Hill and not Carrboro. Its first year of operation was 2007-2008 and its principal was Jeff Thomas, a former vice principal from Chapel Hill High School. Kelly Batten was named principal in August 2008.

 in that it offers a high number of AP classes. 9% of students in the 2009-2010 school year were enrolled in an AP class. The average SAT score is 1,183, which is significantly above the state-wide and national averages. It was named a School of Distinction for the 2009-2010 school year. Carrboro High School has a graduation rate of 94%,which is higher than the district and state average. In the Washington Post 2010 Challenge Index National Rankings, Carrboro High School was ranked 144th in the nation, and 6th in the state, above both East Chapel Hill High School and Chapel Hill High School.

Carrboro High School opened for the 2007-2008 school year without an arts wing, but offered a small number of performing arts courses and rented local theaters for dramatic productions over the next few years. The auditorium was originally slated to open in 2011. However, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board voted in 2009 to postpone construction until 2014. After pressure from students, parents and the arts community, the school board acquiesced and moved the CHS Arts Wing to the top of its construction priorities. Using Qualified School Construction Bonds, the Orange County Commissioners provided funding for the project and construction began in April 2010. The wing was completed in January 2011.

Carrboro High's academic teams, including Quiz Bowl and Model UN, have achieved statewide success, the Quiz Bowl Team finishing first in the state for public schools and fifth in the state overall in 2011.

Athletics

Carrboro High School is a 2A high school in North Carolina. It offers the same varsity sports as Chapel Hill High School. Carrboro High School has access to a baseball field, a softball field, a track, a gymnasium, and two general practice fields.

 won the school's first trophy from its second place finish in the Open race at the Tanglewood Invitational, held in Winston Salem. Carrboro High's girls cross country team won the state championship in 2009 and 2010 and the boys cross country team won the state championship in 2010.

 is sometimes credited with the first win for Carrboro High, as it won a game at a tournament over the summer, but this was not the first regular season win. The field hockey team was rejected from the 2009 State Tournament via a powerball lottery. Despite this, they were also the first CHS team to defeat the State Team, East Chapel Hill. Tennis

placed third in the NC 2A state championship meet where Ken Ryan broke the 2A state record for 50 meter free. In both the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons the men's swimming team won the state championships.

Carrboro's Track Team had many students who went to States in its first two years. The 4x4 mens team came in 5th with two seniors, Cardin Jones, Evan Arant, and two freshmen, Dylan Arant and Michael Juschuk. Cardin Jones came in 1st in the 400 meter race. David Brooks placed second in the long jump. The girls' track and field team won the State Championship in 2011, due to their strong distance squad, and largely in part to Grace Morken, individual champion in the 1600 and 800 meter runs.
