Capital punishment is a legal form of punishment in Vietnam
. Capital punishment (Death penalty) is a special penalty only applied for persons who commit serious crimes. The death penalty cannot be applied to juvenile offenders, pregnant women and women nursing children under 36 months old at the time the crime was committed or being tried. These cases shall be converted into life imprisonment.
29 articles in the Penal Code cite that the death penalty is an optional punishment. Executions are carried out by a firing squad of seven policemen, while the prisoners are blindfolded and tied to stakes. The firing squad will be replaced by lethal injection starting from November 2011 after the Law on Execution of criminal judgments was passed by the National Assembly (refer to article 59(1) of the law). There are 29 recognized crimes carrying the death penalty in the country.
