Etymologie

Mentioned in the form Campendud 1071. Occitan “sloping field”, “inclined field”. Fortuitous homophony with Capendu, hamlet of Blainville-Crevon (Seine-Maritime) which means “hung cat”. Armorial bearings

History

One finds potteries dating about 20.000 years ago in the Mayrac locality. The traces reveal a Roman camp site near the placement of the windmill of Roque Del Die (Occitan for Rock of God).

Culture, wine, and products

For 7 years, FestiVoix organized by the community of communes has invited choral societies and artists more or less known like Idir or Ilene Barnes. The common one has on its territory following qualitative names:
  • Local wine of the Slopes of Miramont The Cantalric cellars, as for them, produced wine derivatives of soil created by the Château Capendu:
  • Rozangria, starting from rosy wine
  • Blankiz, starting from white wine

Personalities

  • Ferdinand Théron, opposing to the plebiscite of Napoleon III in 1870, companion of Omer Sarraut, general advisor of Capendu in 1880; it gives up its seat of general advisor when it is elected appointed of Aude in 1885. He will be re-elected appointed into 1889,1898, and 1902, and senator of 1903 to 1910; he sat at the extreme left of the palate Bourbon.
  • Auguste Barbaza, born in Capendu on October 24, 1845, deceased in Capendu on October 1, 1912, opposing to the plebiscite of Napoleon III in 1870, is elected general advisor of Capendu in 1886, succeeding Ferdinand Théron. He is elected socialist radical senator in 1904.
