as intermediary officials during the Portuguese colonial period. After independence in 1975, some remained in the country. In 1995, there was an estimated 500 Cape Verdeans living in the country.
During the 2001 Presidential election in Cape Verde, 122 Cape Verdean residents of Mozambique
were registered to vote. Voters could cast their ballots at one of two polling stations, located in Maputo and Nampula.
In November 2005, the Cape Verdean government sponsored five nationals residing in Mozambique to a round-trip flight to Cape Verde
. This trip back to the islands was part of the Institute of Communities' program, "Cape Verde in the Heart," which is being collaborated with the Prime Minister’s Office. The program's objective "is to provide these Cape Verdeans with the possibility of reactivating their connection to Cape Verde, their origins and their culture."
