According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 248.81 square miles (644.4 km²), of which 246.88 square miles (639.4 km²) (or 99.22%) is land and 1.94 square miles (5 km²) (or 0.78%) is water.

The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.40 males.
