History

The Canadian Institute of Management is Canada’s senior management association. It was founded in 1942 as the Society of Industrial Methods Engineers and in 1946 became the Canadian Industrial Management Association. Becoming a multidisciplinary organization, it settled on its current identity in 1970. As a Federally Chartered not-for-profit organization, the CIM operates through 17 branches across Canada. The CIM has a long history of servicing managers and aspiring managers within Canadian industry. Since its foundation, the CIM has provided professional development and certification to over 60,000 managers and grants several well-recognized professional and academic qualifications.

Mandate

By providing support to its members, the Canadian Institute of Management promotes management development and publishes a widely read quarterly periodical, the Canadian Manager. The CIM also provides a framework for networking and knowledge exchange across Canada though regular events and encouraging publication.

National Accreditation

The Canadian Institute of Management accredits full-time programs within Canadian colleges, polytechnics and universities as meeting the academic requirements for the Certified in Management and Professional Manager post-nominal designations.

Certificate in Supervisory Management

The Canadian Institute of Management and partner institutions offer a 4-course Certificate in Supervisory Management (CSM) consisting of the following courses:
  • Introduction to Management
  • Managerial Communications
  • Canadian Business Law
  • Optional Course


A special Framework exists for Canadian Professional Engineers and Certified Engineering and Applied Science Technicians and Technologists to obtain the CSM qualification.

Certified in Management (C.I.M.)

The Certified in Management (C.I.M.) designation is awarded upon completion of the 8-course Certificate in Management and Administration Studies and two years of verified managerial experience. The academic requirement for the C.I.M. designation are offered through the CIM and partner institutions across Canada.

Professional Manager (P.Mgr.)

The Professional Manager (P.Mgr.) designation denotes an academic and practical Canadian experience background which will permit businesses to look at the holders of this designation with confidence as to their management skills. Chartered Manager is the Canadian Institute of Management’s senior management qualification and chartered professional designation. It is abbreviated as C.Mgr. and used as a post-nominal to accredited members in good standing. It provides validation to outstanding adherence to the theory and practice of ethical management and the ongoing development of new methods in the management arts and sciences that focus on sustainability and leadership. It goes beyond academic qualification and provides clients with a benchmark of professionalism and ethical behaviour in business.
