History

Camanche was founded by Dr. George Peck in the late 1830s, who is buried in the Rosehill Cemetery in Camanche.
On June 3, 1860, Camanche was struck by an intense tornado. With a damage path 1000 yards (914.4 m) wide and 80 miles (128.7 km) long, this tornado killed 92 people and injured 200. The death toll in Camanche alone was 22 dead, according to "Harpers Weekly", June 23, 1860, as well as the granite boulder tombstone under which they are buried in the cemetery in Camanche. Estimates vary widely, however, ranging from less than 50 people killed to as many as 300.
