History

The townland of Calmore is named after a large ancient hazel tree that was said to have been used in pagan ceremonies. Calmore castle and the Calmore Crannog are both found in this townland. Calmore was part of the Drapers Company's estate that was leased to the Rowley family, which resulted in Calmore castle being also known as "Rowley Castle".
