), Calcutta National Medical College has its origin in the then founded National Medical Institute or "Jatiya Ayurbigyan Vidyalaya" on 1st of Baisakh in 1921. This institute is a product of the historical Non-cooperation movement
. It was inaugurated by Subhas Chandra Bose.
It was till 2003, affiliated with the University of Calcutta
. Now it is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences

Admission to this institute is on merit basis and by national level competitive examinations.
Calcutta National Medical College is locally known as Chittaranjan hospital. It was established in 1948. In 1967 the institute was nationalized. The college is recognised by Medical Council of India
(MCI) and has all the departments which is specified by the MCI.
Every year 150 students are admitted to the MBBS course based on the rank in the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination
(WBJEE) and also through All India Pre Medical Test
(AIPMT) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education
. At present there are 18 seats for postgraduate degree courses and 30 for diploma courses.
The MBBS course is of five and a half year duration which includes one year of compulsory internship.
