JISC CETIS originally began operation in 1998 as the UK IMS Centre, as in its early days it was primarily an organisation devoted to the development and dissemination of open technical specifications as part of the IMS Global Learning Consortium

. It later became known as CETIS, the Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards.

Since then, CETIS broadened its remit to work with a range of standards organizations relevant to the UK education sector.

On 1 August 2006, CETIS became a formal JISC service and its name changed to JISC CETIS.
