C20NE
Encyclopedia
The C20NE is a Family II fuel-injected, four-cylinder engine developed by Opel
in the late '80s. It is essentially very similar to the C20XE
, but has a simpler cylinder head design which features 2 valves per cylinder (rather than the four of the C20XE
) and single overhead camshaft. For this reason, the powerplant is commonly referred to as '8 Valve'. The C20NE was factory fitted to early Opel Astra
and Vauxhall Cavalier
models, but also found its way into the entry spec Calibra. Subsequently, the fitment of the C20NE engine permitted the use of an automatic transmission, particularly in the Calibra where the C20XE
developed excessive amounts of power and torque for the automatic box.
