While investigating, Goren and Eames have to sort through several corpses, including the victim's brother, a hitman
who botched a work and was beaten to death two years previously. The evidence seems to point to a jailed mobster, who is due for parole
, until a suspect linked to all the murders is found dead.
Nevertheless, it is not long before the detectives find patterns of evidence that point toward a crooked former policeman, and a scheme none of them expected.
Eames: Oh that's right, that would take a subpoena from the grand jury.
[Goren starts opening a container of hard smelling cheese that belonged to the victim]
Goren: Yeah, it's very, uh... uh, assertive.
Eames: Yeah.
Goren: Sheep's milk. It's, uh, "rochetta."
Eames: You can tell that just from the smell?
Goren: Label.
[Eames, while watching Goren manipulate the skull of a murdered suspect. She grimaces]
Eames: You keep doing that, I'm gonna drop this kid right here.
[Referring to a related murder case in another precinct]
Deakins: I'd say they put in about two hours' work and called it quits.
Eames: Maybe because they had about 2,000 other homicides to solve that day.
[Referring to a case of mistaken identity]
Deakins: They whacked the wrong lawyer.
[To Goren and Eames]
Carver: I don't know whether to laugh or cry. You have an offended mobster and his son... A case of mistaken identity... An incompetent hitman... A hitman's widow... A hitman's missing sister... A corrupt cop... And now, another dead killer. It's operatic.
