This wharf has a colourful history. Originally Millwall Iron Works
it bought by John Scott Russell
and was where the SS Great Eastern
was built and launched (a huge steam and sail ship built in 1858 and designed by the brilliant engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel
). It was also a colour factory until the late '80s when the operations were relocated.
In 1988 Burrells was converted to residential use and now consists of some 400 apartments with central leisure facilities. Burrells is well known for its relaxed and social atmosphere.
