Tank, a black drug dealer with a score to settle, makes it clear he intends to murder Bullet for taking out his eye while they served time together up North. Bullet seems to welcome the challenge. In the meantime, he keeps himself occupied by shooting heroin and robbing his neighbor's house for jewelry, which he sells to an Italian gangster named "Frankie Eyelashes".
One night Tank approaches Bullet and tells his henchman to knock him out. The fight ends in a draw and Bullet returns home where he tells his mother he loves her and he's sorry for everything he put her through over the years. Bullet then has a final showdown with Tank, who shoots him dead. Soon after, Louis gets revenge by slitting Tank's throat and leaving Bullet's pet rat (named Tony Curtis) on the dead body.

Plot
Butch "Bullet" Stein is a 35 year old Jewish ex-con who gets released from prison after an 8 year bid. He goes back to live with his family in New York; his hard-drinking father, depressed mother, war-addicted older brother Louis and his younger brother Ruby, an aspiring artist. Bullet's best friend is a ladies man named Lester.Tank, a black drug dealer with a score to settle, makes it clear he intends to murder Bullet for taking out his eye while they served time together up North.
