It consists of a secondary school and is the only school in Weymouth & Portland to also have a Sixth Form. Also on site is the privately owned Budmouth Community sports centre. It teaches over 1,500 students in the 11–18 age range, school years 7 to 14. It teaches GCSEs, As Levels, A Levels and a range of certificate qualifications. Its results are better than average for GCSEs.
It is one of the few schools in Dorset to have a Combined Cadet Force
which is open to all students in year 9 or above.
The school is named after Thomas Hardy's semi-fictional land of Wessex.

World Heritage Site. The campus is being redeveloped, for occupancy in 2011. The procedure will be in two parts: the first half of the new building will be assembled and the students and teachers moved in. Next the first half of the old school will be knocked down. Then the second half of the new school will be built and finally the second half of the old school will be demolished. The school will gain a state of the art hi-tech campus designed to meet the needs of a Technology college and ideally suited for delivering a high quality education.
