Buckhaven High School
Encyclopedia
Buckhaven High School is a six year co-educational non-denominational comprehensive school with a current roll of 1226. In the past Buckhaven was the Levenmouth's high school for pupils that were able to pass their eleven plus exam. The school's motto is Perseverando.

The school

The school’s origins date back to the 1860s and for many years it occupied a site in College Street, Buckhaven. The present building has been in use since 1957 and in 1976 an extension was completed. The school recently underwent refurbishment work in order to upgrade the existing office and make the school more accessible.
In 2010/2011, it had a budget of £4,644,558 of which £4,509,358 was spent on employee costs.

Facilities

The school has a range of facilities and is surrounded by extensive playing fields. In addition to the usual facilities there are open plan areas for Science, Technical Education and Home Economics, a Lecture Theatre, Assembly Hall and stage, a large Resources Centre, Language Classrooms, Computing/ICT rooms, Technology rooms and a Games Hall.

The school is also known for its brilliant orchestra, windband, string orchestra and choirs. There are numerous sports teams, including the upcoming rugby team: The Buckhaven Sharks coached by Mr Willie Allan.

Catchments

The catchments for the school are Buckhaven Primary, Methilhill Primary, East Wemyss Primary, Coaltown of Wemyss Primary, Parkhill Primary, Kirkton of Largo Primary and Kennoway Primary. They also receive pupils from out with the catchments who submit placing requests. Two school that Buckhaven High most commonly receives requests from are Denbeath and Aberhill Primary schools. There has been debate over whether or not Denbeath Primary should be placed into the catchment as Buckhaven High school is much closer to the Denbeath area than Denbeath's current catchment high school Kirkland High School.
