Prior to serving in the Assembly, Thompson owned and operated several successful businesses, including a marble import company, importing construction marble tiles and slabs from Malaysia. He served on the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District board from 1992 until his election. He ran for the Riverside County Board of Supervisors in 1982.
