, Brother Rice was founded by the Congregation of Christian Brothers
in 1960 and named after their founder Edmund Ignatius Rice
. The school's mission is to develop the body, mind and soul of its students and is regarded as one of the premier athletic programs in the state, having earned 54 state championships in 49 years in various sports. The Brother Rice Warriors won their first state skiing championship in the school's history in late February 2007, also becoming the first high school located in southeastern Michigan to bring home the gold. Less than two weeks later, the varsity swim team captured another swimming state title. In 2007, the Brother Rice lacrosse team won its 10th state championship in the last 12 years, giving Brother Rice its 49th state championship overall.
The Warriors are members of the Michigan High School Athletic Association
and compete in the Detroit Catholic League with Detroit Catholic Central High School
as their primary rival. Secondary rivals include St. Mary's Preparatory

. Their head football coach, Al Fracassa, is the all time wins leader in Michigan high school football history with 400 wins; he was named National High School Coach of the Year in 2005.
The school was the site of a labor battle in 2003 and 2004 when a group of teachers attempted to unionize. However, a state court ruled that that state labor and union boards have no jurisdiction over private religious schools.
