They begin play on October 28, 2011, the Cape Cod Bluefins are a result of a market study conducted by the Federal Hockey League during the end of the 2010-2011 regular season when they relocated the Broome County Barons to Cape Cod. The Barons franchise was owned by the Commissioner of the FHL, Don Kirnan.
On March 3, 2011 the Federal Hockey League franchise rights for Cape Cod were transferred to the Cape Cod Hockey Development Foundation.
