Founded in 1973, the orchestra consists of a mix of amateur, semi-professional, and professional musicians who play concerts throughout the year at the Church of St. Ann and the Holy Trinity in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The BSO's Artistic Director is Nicholas Armstrong.

Personnel

Artistic Director Nicholas Armstrong has conducted throughout the United States and Europe, and in his native England, where he began his musical studies. Armstrong subsequently studied conducting at the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello in Venice, where he was also a member of the Teatro La Fenice orchestra. He has worked with Pierre Boulez

Youth Orchestra

The Brooklyn Symphony Youth Orchestra, a new program of the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, began rehearsals for its first season in September 2008. Kelly Howard, Concert Master of the BSO, conducts the youth orchestra, with a team of professional musicians providing frequent coaching sessions. The BSYO had its debut performance at Poly Prep Country Day School in Bay Ridge, NY, on Sunday, March 8, 2009. The group plans additional performances both on its own and with the BSO.

Performances

The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra's 2009-2010 season program showcases 18th century classics, an all-English program, and 20th century innovators such as Kurt Weill and Arnold Schoenberg. The season line-up is viewable at http://brooklynsymphonyorchestra.org/season.html.
