Bromsgrove International School Thailand (BIST) is a British curriculum day and boarding school in eastern Bangkok, Thailand, catering for students between the ages of 2 and 18. The school is located within the grounds of a 36-hole golf course within 15 kilometres (9m) of Bangkok International Airport (Suvannabhumi) and 30 kilometres (19m) from central Bangkok. It provides an alternative for students in Southeast Asia to study in a UK Boarding School closer to home.
The School’s mission is to identify and develop the potential of each student, provide them with the best achievable qualifications and prepare them for a happy and successful life as responsible members of the global community and believe that academic rigour, discipline, respect and flair make a happy and successful child at school.
The school has two campuses which cater for students from Early Years to Year 13 (3–18 years old) including IGCSE and since 2008, A levels. It is affiliated with Bromsgrove School in England[1], founded in 1553.
History
From the vision of the school founders Riza Sripetchvandee and Ian Davison, a new school was opened in 2002 under the name of Windsor International School and ownership of Windsor Education Co. Ltd. The School was constructed at Soi 164 Ramkhamheang Road, Minburi, in Eastern Bangkok.
The pioneering band of teaching staff were recruited from England and led by the Headmaster Mr Stephen Robinson. Over the course of the next two years pupil numbers grew steadily, and a new building was opened in September 2004 to meet the demand.
In April 2004, the school became affiliated to the Bromsgrove School UK and changed its name to Bromsgrove International School Thailand. Bromsgrove School UK was founded over 500 years ago and is a leading co-educational independent day and boarding school for 1,500 pupils situated in the English Midlands.
In 2004, a new plot of land was purchased, set in the serenity of Windsor Park and Golf Club, 20 minutes from the Ramkhamhaeng Road Campus, and building commenced on a new Preparatory and Secondary School for students from 7 to 18 years. The work was completed in September 2005, and the new campus opened the same month. The Ramkhamheang Road Campus was converted to an Early Years campus for children aged 2 to 6.
A new Headmaster, Mr Jeffery Topp was appointed in August 2005 to take the School forward in the next phase of its development. Mr Topp came to Bromsgrove with extensive senior management experience from England and Thailand in both day and boarding schools. The current Headmaster is Mr Steve Challoner, formerly of Bromsgrove School UK.
Boarding
Temporary boarding facilities were opened in January 2006, and new boarding students from Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam and Australia broadened and added to the diversity of the student body. In March 2008, a new purpose-built boarding house, Windsor House, was opened by Digby, Lord Jones of Birmingham, an Old Bromsgrovian, and a further House, Tudor, opened in 2010 and now houses the girl boarding students. The school now has comfortable accommodation for 200 boarding students, and is the major international boarding school in Bangkok.
Affiliations
Bromsgrove International School Thailand is operated by a private company, Windsor Education Co Ltd.[2]
It operates under a license granted by Bromsgrove School in Bromsgrove, near Birmingham, UK in 2004. Close ties exist between the two schools with scholarships for Thailand students to study in the UK, a Bromsgrove UK presence on the Board of Governors and regular staff and management visits between campuses.
Bromsgrove gained accreditation as an examination centre by CIE[3] in 2007.
In May 2008, Bromsgrove affiliated with Daewon Foreign Language High School [4] in Seoul, South Korea. A substantial number of students from Daewon board and study at Bromsgrove for a part of their secondary school career, following a combination the British and Korean curricula . Daewon is a highly selective school in Korea ranked by Wall Street Journal as one of the top schools in the world with a high success rate for entry to Ivy League Universities. The affiliation allows Bromsgrove to offer educational excellence from the best of the West and the East.
Bromsgrove achieved accreditation by the Council for International Schools (CIS)[5] in 2011. The School has been a member of the International Schools Association of Thailand (ISAT)[6] since 2003, and competes in the Bangkok International School Athletic Conference (BISAC) )[7].
Houses
The House system was introduced in 2005 with the opening of the Windsor Park Campus. There are currently three Houses at Bromsgrove, named after previous and current Headmasters at Bromsgrove School UK:
Edwards House – named after the current Headmaster (from 2004), Mr Chris Edwards MA, Merton College, Oxford
Taylor House – named after Mr Tim Taylor MA, St Peter’s College, Oxford (Headmaster 1986-2004)
Walters House – named after Mr David Walters M.C., MA, Brasenose College, Oxford (Headmaster 1931-1953).
Students in each House compete in a number of sporting and other activities throughout the school year, and are awarded individual House Points for good work and performance. House Trophies are awarded on an annual basis at the Annual Awards Ceremony.
There is also a Student Council, guided by the head Boy and head Girl, which discusses matters of student concern with Senior Management on a regular basis.
Golf
Bromsgrove is the home for junior golf in Thailand. Its location in a 36-hole golf course allows it to include golf in its curriculum. All students from 7 years old learn golf. Many of the school's junior golfers excel in junior world championships and tournaments around the region. A recent win for one of the junior golfers include a gold medal in the recent Southeast Asian games in December 2007.
Campus
Both the Early Years and Preparatory/ Secondary campuses offer excellent academic, sporting and extra curriculum facilities for an education in the 21st century.
The Early Years Campus is ideally situated close to a growing suburban community and offers a uniquely friendly environment for young students. The Preparatory and Secondary School is located on the edge of the city in a golf course setting with stunning views of the local countryside.
Publications
Bromsgrove publishes a regular school newsletter, ‘The Bromsgrovian’, which is distributed to all parents and available on the school website and highlights student achievement and reports on school events.
A Year Book is published annually condensing the previous year’s events, including academic and sporting achievements and residential and day trips.
