British Beefcake
Encyclopedia
"British Beefcake" are band of British origin who formed in 2001, consisting of Lead Guitarist Neil Wyatt and British Blues
veteran Tom Broxup, utilising his skills as a talented multi-instrumentalist. The two met in the toilets of a late seventies punk rock
concert, where they quickly became friends and decided to form a band. They began to rehearse soon after, under the name of 'The Broxup Big Blues Bonanza Band featuring Horns', playing a style of energetic Jump Blues
, featuring a local brass band, The Cold Blowers, adding sultry and smooth horns to their gritty and uptempo blues rock. After a successful stint touring the pubs and clubs of Southern England, the brass section were fired (allegedly after an argument between The Cold Blowers and Broxup over road transport). A new name, British Beefcake, was chosen to reflect the duo's patriotic beliefs.
The duo recorded an album in the Summer of 2004, The Instrumental Album, featuring a noticeably changed style from their rough and ready blues, displaying a soft Shadows inspired guitar style. Critic Brian Sewell
raved about the album stating, "The Instrumental Album is a a powerful work, communicating a calming and reassuring power through the subtle and wholly sensual guitarwork of Neil Wyatt, a retro styled guitarist worthy of Hank Marvin
." Various local papers speculated that Topper Headon
, formerly of The Clash
, played drums on the album, however both Wyatt and Broxup deny these claims.
Further praise came from renowned drummer Bev Bevan
, who has played with the likes of ELO
and Black Sabbath
, who stated in a 2004 interview that "British Beefcake are a bloody good band, with bloody good tunes and two bloody good blokes manning the instruments. Bands in Britain just aren't this good anymore". Due to popular demand, the band will touring America
in the coming year.
