Along the way, Brin came to horrifying realizations about the wishsong. For years she had believed it no more than a toy, yet now it was a deadly weapon. Her doubts grew with the death of Allanon, and Rone's growing addiction to the magic of the Sword of Leah
. Along the way to the Maelmord, Brin met Cogline, Kimber Boh, and Whisper the moor cat, the latter two becoming her closest friends next to Rone. She also incurred the wrath of the Grimpond, a shade creature who told her how to get inside the Maelmord.
Brin came to a decision to leave her companions, so as to save them from death. However, this turned against her when the Ildatch, proving to be a corruptive and sentient force, began to transform her into something evil. Luckily for all, she was saved by her brother Jair, and destroyed the Ildatch. Afterwards, she met with the shade of Allanon, who told her not to use her magic again.
