Gartland did not have to wait long to find a new club as he was snapped up by Monaghan United on December 18, 2007. He immediately cemented a starting XI place for Monaghan and would make 94 league and cup appearances, scoring 6 goals for the club. Following Monaghan's narrow miss on promotion to the League of Ireland Premier Division in 2010, Gartland joined Portadown FC in January 2011 as one of four new signings by the club during the January transfer window.
