Brambletye School

Brambletye was founded at Sidcup Place, Kent in 1919 and moved to its present glorious location in rolling Sussex countryside on the southern outskirts of East Grinstead in 1933. The large country house, in its own wooded estate of 100 acres, overlooks Ashdown Forest and Weir Wood Reservoir. The School became a charitable trust in 1969 with a board of Governors. The School has evolved from being a small, all boys’ boarding school to its present position as a leading co-educational day and boarding school of about 290 pupils. There are approximately 48 full-time members of staff who teach across three departments: the Nursery, the Pre-Prep and the Prep School. The School also employs a number of peripatetic and part time staff for music, games, learning support and classroom assistance.

The boarding ethos is important to the School and the majority of pupils board by the age of eleven. Children come from near and far; local areas, London, and all over the world. Brambletye creates for its boarders a caring extended family environment where the children feel safe and valued. Children take part in a wide range of activities and clubs during the week in the evenings and at weekends. At Brambletye, exeats occur every other weekend and boarders in Years 4, 5 and 6 are allowed home every weekend after matches on a Saturday.

Children may join the Nursery class at the age of two and a half before progressing to Reception at four. Boys and girls transfer to the Preparatory Department at the age of seven. Brambletye prepares children at thirteen for transfer to a wide range of leading Senior Schools throughout the country. In addition to the examined subjects at Common Entrance, pupils study Art, Music, Design Technology, PE, ICT and Drama. The School enjoys a justifiably strong reputation in Art. With extensive games fields and excellent facilities, sport plays a large and important part in the life of the School. There is a Sports Hall, tennis and netball courts, squash courts, a swimming pool, a golf course and several playing fields.

Recent developments have provided first class facilities and building projects have included a state of the art seven classroom block, a purpose built arts centre including a 270 seat Theatre, a sports hall, a Pre-Prep building and the redevelopment of the Science Laboratories.

Brambletye aims to provide a broad and balanced education which will enable children to achieve excellence in as many areas of school life as possible. It also aims to create a strong family environment where enjoyment and fun sit comfortably alongside structure and a strong sense of purpose.
