The Boilermaker is organized by a staff of race directors, in conjunction with the National Distance Running Hall of Fame
and has been run every year since 1978. The next race will be run on July 10, 2011. The race is touted as the largest 15k road race in the United States, and it is popular among elite and casual runners alike. For 2011, the race was capped at 13,000 entrants, which was met on May 14, nearly two months before the day of the race.
The race is sponsored, in part, by the Matt Brewing Company
of Utica, NY. Appropriately, runners are given commemorative pint glasses in lieu of a runner's shirt as part of registration. The race is televised by WUTR

History
The Boilermaker was established in 1978 by Earle C. Reed as a measure of giving back to the local community through his Utica Boiler business. The first 15K race in 1978 had a budget of $750 and attracted just over 800 local runners.
