The Board of Revenue was a Colonial British institution and part of the British Raj
in India
. It provided the crucial role of revenue management during the period when the British East India Company
ruled.It was a creation of the East India Company in 1781.The Board of Revenue was formed to help the company's government in the detailed work of revenue and admisnistration.The Britishers had discovered "a synthesis between the collection of revenue and the general administration". The first Board of Revenue was set up in Bengal in 1786, Tamil Nadu soon followed suit.In the course of time this organization came to be set up in most other provinces. Thus ,today we find a Board of Revenue in all states except Andhra Pradesh, Gujrat,Maharashtra , which have Revenue Tribunals and Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, which have one or more Financial Commissioners instead of a Board.
Board of Revenue is also an institution of Government of Bangladesh and is headed by a secretary
within the Ministry of Finance.
