Derived from a hotel name, formerly called Blue Mountain Estate, named by Queensland Place Names Board 1 May 1975. Named and bounded by the Minister for Natural Resources 12 February 1999. Regazetted without change by the Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, 23 September 2005.

The area was named in 1975 after a hotel in the area known as Blue Mountains Estate.
