The principal at Black Mountain is David Hall who has been there since the beginning of the 2006-07 school year. Joining at the same time was the assistant principal, Casey Currigan.

Programs

Black Mountain Middle School has an Academy for highly motivated students who enjoy rigorous curriculm. The Academy is not a remedial program. It performs well in its testing and academics. Black Mountain also has an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program and recently became a National Demonstration School. There is also a GATE (Gifted And Talented Education) program. This goes more in depth with its teaching than normal basic education classes do. The Science Olympiad program is another well developed program at Black Mountain. In the 2008-09 school year, the team placed third, and the previous year placing first. Both years they went on to compete statewide. There is also a YMCA (often referred to as Power Hour) after school program, where students usually do their homework until their parents can pick them up. Clubs during the 2008 -09 school year included: Arabic class, Chess Club, Cooking, Hip Hop, Robotics Club, and Spanish Club. Throughout the school year there are also after school sports that students can participate in.

Renovation

Renovation started at Black Mountain Middle School in May 2008 and was expected to go until May 2009, but went over and was not totally complete at the end of the 2008-09 school year. The total money spent was $1.4 million which was gained from Propositions U and C. The following is what was planned for the reconstruction:
  • Utility upgrade/efficiency improvements
  • Renovate/upgrade restrooms as needed
  • Add classroom resource spaces and classrooms for project growth
  • Add science laboratories
  • Expand/renovate library
  • Renovate/expand staff work area
  • Modernize classrooms/add resource areas
  • ADA upgrades/compliance
  • Food service/lunch area expansion/renovation
  • Site/grounds improvements for safety compliance (metal gate around campus)
  • Add/upgrade furniture and instructional equipment
  • Upgrade/replace communications and fire alarm systems

In addition to all of this, planters and trees were put in throughout the school. New grass was also placed in front of the school and in the quad.

Demographics

In the 2008-09 school year, there was an enrollment of 1,297 students. Of the students, 129 are English Language Learners. It is known for being very diverse, but a little less than half of the students are white. Also in the 2008-09 school year, there were 50 teachers that taught at Black Mountain.

Scores (Testing and Other)

In the Base API School Report for 2008, Black Mountain had a ranking of 10 statewide. The 2008 CST's mean scale score in the advanced area was 41% for sixth graders, 47% for seventh graders, and 36% for eighth graders. The seventh graders during the 2007-08 school year performed well in the California Physical Fitness Test, with 70.4% of the students meeting 6 of 6 criteria points. In the 2008 Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) Report, the whole school met all of the criteria and was proficient in all areas.
