However, there are enough references to shared historical events to argue that, Black Man can be seen as a very early prequel to the Takeshi Kovacs
novels. ie: the colonization of Mars, Cryosleep used to facilitate space travel, and the concept of transferring a human consciousness into an alternate body.
. Carl, having won by lottery the right to return from Mars, works covertly, tracking down renegade Thirteens. The novel follows Carl's attempts to apprehend a Mars escapee and uncover the forces shielding his quarry.
