. The population was 268 at the 2000 census. The town is named after John Birdsall, a circuit judge.
The Town of Birdsall is in the northeast part of Allegany County.
The Town of Birdsall was created in 1829 from parts of the Towns of Almond
and Allen
. In 1980 The Fire Department of Birdsall was started by William Timberlake, the future Undersherrif of Allegany County (1982–2001). Timberlake along with Dale Wheeler were able to get the first fire truck donated from the Town of Egypt, NY Fire Department for $1.
Timberlake moved to Birdsall with his family on 8-12-77 from Levittown, LI, after retiring from the NYC Police Department (110th Precinct, Queens NY).
From 1882 to April 1, 1947, Birsdall was located on the main line of the Pittsburg, Shawmut & Northern Railroad and predecessors. It was abandoned on the latter date by the U. S. Interstate Commerce Commission to promote the use of highway truck transportation in the area.

The racial makeup of the town was 96.64% White, 1.87% African American, 0.37% Native American, and 1.12% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.75% of the population.
There were 111 households out of which 24.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.5% were married couples
living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the town the population was spread out with 21.3% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 32.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 106.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.1 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $21,705, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $29,286 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income
