Personal life

Born in Queens, New York, Ehlers eventually moved closer to Manhattan and attended Satellite Academy, a performing arts school, as a child. Ehlers briefly attended Syracuse University

 before focusing on her acting career.

In 1991, Ehlers married Dr. William Parsons. Ehlers became involved with Mark Derwin

, her co-star on Guiding Light

 shortly after marrying Parsons and they later divorced in 1992.

On March 22, 1996, she married Matthew Christian, who is a sports video editor. Beth and Matthew have two sons, Henry Jack Christian, who was born on May 21, 1999 and Will, born July 16, 2001. The couple divorced in 2005. Ehlers discussed her life as a single mother in the 1/15/2008 issue of Soap Opera Digest, noting that she and her ex-husband are still close friends and that she does not believe she ever will marry again.

During her time on "GL", she was nominated five times for a Daytime Emmy (for Outstanding Younger Actress, in 1992 and 1993; Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, in 1999 and 2002; and, in 2006, for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series). She was the first daytime actress to ever be nominated in all three categories.
