The program explores stories of crime and investigation that are unveiled in wealthy families and relationships, with conspiracies, hidden accounts, false identities and secret affairs. The program tells stories of murder and mystery on a grand scale. The victims and individuals involved in cases come from upscale levels of society, from oil tycoons to real estate moguls. President and General Manager of ID, Henry Schleiff considers Behind Mansion Walls one of ID's great shows, which uncovers "darkest corners of high society's mansions to reveal torrid tales of the rich and powerful". The first episode of the show was on Fred Keller and James Sullivan murder cases. The host of the show is Christopher Mason, a premier journalist and author, who had written for news agencies and several books for the last 15 years.

Behind Mansion Walls is produced for ID by Beyond Productions. Geoff Fitzpatrick as executive producer and Andrew Farrell as show runner. For Investigation Discovery, Pamela Deutsch is executive producer, Sara Kozak is vice president of production and Henry Schleiff is president.
