Bayan Lewis was interim Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department
in 1997. He was chosen by majority vote (3-2) by the LAPD commission, March 31, 1997. Prior to this, he served on the force for 34 years. When voted, Lewis said he was uninterested in taking over Willie Williams
' position. He served as director of the Office of Operations, and was responsible for the largest command in the department. Lewis was instrumental in creating the department's mobile field force.
Lewis took the position May 18, 1997, two months early from the July 6 date Williams was supposed to step-down after a deal.
After retirement from the LAPD. Lewis became chief of police for the Los Angeles County Office of Public Safety
