Bartholomew Bretherton was a coach proprietor from Rainhill
near St Helens
who also rode many times in the Grand National
as an amateur rider, winning the race in 1840
in the colours of Henry Villebois on his horse Jerry
Bartholomew inherited his coach business from his father Peter in 1824 and with his fortune he purchased Hayes House in Rainhill as the family seat. He was married with two sons, the eldest of which predeceased him. He was widowed in 1873 and died at his brother's home in Liverpool
on March 29 1874 having been a guest there for that year's Grand National, which took place three days before.
