. There are two principals; Alice T. Worth who supervises mainly K-4 (Dr. Theodore Riggen retired in 2009), and Timothy Crowley who mainly takes care of grades 5-8. Crowley was one of only six principals to feature in the '2006 National Distinguished Principals' awards.

In December 2005, two pupils from the school were killed in a fire, the third time in three years that students had lost their lives in an accident.

In tests, whose results were released in February 2007, students at Barre Town performed above and, in one case, well above the state averages. On the writing test 60 percent of Barre Town students were proficient or better — 11 percentage points above the statewide average. The noted Scholastic company reported that Kindergarten students at Barre Town spent six weeks experimenting with force and motion in the school’s science lab, which is unusual at that age.
