The title descended from father to son until the early death of his grandson, the third Baron, in 1967. The late Baron was succeeded by his first cousin, the fourth Baron. He was the son of the Hon. William Gladstone Bethell, third son of the first Baron. Lord Bethell was a historian and Conservative
