Appearance

Male Barbour's Map Turtles are on average from 3.5 to 5.5 inches (9 – 14 cm) long. Whereas female Barbour's Map Turtles can be from 6 to 12.5 inches (15 – 32 cm) long. According to Conant, "Females attain really imposing dimensions, and their heads are enormously enlarged". These turtles possess black tipped spines on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th vertebrae. These are very noticeable in males, and resemble a Dorsal fin
