In 1997, Bank Austria took over Creditanstalt, the country's second-largest bank. In 2000, BA-CA joined forces with HVB Group. Since December 2006, BA-CA has been a member of UniCredit Group. In 2006 continued its expansion in Russia by acquiring remaining shares in International Moscow Bank and 100% of institutional business of Aton Capital
