The vast majority of pupils come from Ballycarry village and surrounding rural area. The staff comprises the principal (Mr Geoff Hunter), four full-time teachers, two part-time teachers, four classroom assistants, school secretary, caretaker, supervisory assistants and catering staff. It is within the North Eastern Education and Library Board
area and features an annual May Fair and a Halloween disco.
inspection carried out in October 2001 found that it "is a happy and welcoming school which enjoys the interest and strong support of its parents and governors. The staff form a hard-working team; together they have created a caring community and an attractive and orderly learning environment. The teachers relate to the children well and are committed to their well-being and development. They broaden the children's experiences through providing, for example, clubs and educational visits, links with other schools and involvement in the local community". The children themselves are found to be "pleasant, courteous and respectful ... well motivated to learn and their behaviour around the school is exemplary". However, the report also concluded that "the children have insufficient opportunity to use ICT
to enhance their learning across the curriculum". As a result the school has identified the area as a priority for development and it has plans to improve the children's experiences using ICT.
Like most schools it has a website. The school website has a news page where notes given to school children can be viewed. Other sections include art, music, literacy and drama which are updated regularly with pupils' work. The school has a system to protect identities of pupils with numbers and letters. For instance if your child had a piece of literacy entitled "A moving world" and they were in P5, in the name column there would be a number 5 followed by a letter the class teacher will tell your child that letter and you can view your child's work.
