History and origin

There are a number of theories as to the origin of the Bains.

According to Heornle and Cunningham, Harshavardhana belonged to this clan, Harshavardhana was an emperor who ruled Northern India for forty one years. He was the son of Prabhakar Vardhan and younger brother of Rajyavardhan, a king of Thanesar. At the height of his power his kingdom spanned the Punjab, Gujarat, Bengal, Orissa and the entire Indo-Gangetic plain North of the Narmada River. He is connected with Shrimalpur which is a village on the border of Hoshiarpur

Bains is one of the Jat clans mentioned by Waris Shah in his epic Punjabi poem Heer.

According to other traditions, Bains are one of the 36 royal Rajput clans in India along with Salar, Dahima etc. It is believed they are by origin Hindu Jaats, and claim descent from Bains, who lived at the time of Emperor Firuz Shah Tughlaq.
