History

 and the major settlement in the area, Ava Corners.

Legendary Revolutionary War scout and indian fighter Nat Foster, who is a possible inspiration for Cooper's "Natty Bumpoo" was buried in a family plot just west of Ava Corners on the West Ava Road, a modern marker placed there in 1937 by Rev. Clarence Mason, his biographer.

The population began with 9 people, grew to its largest 1,260 in 1860, but by 1920, was 610. In 1905, Hiram Cronk
