The Augusta and Savannah Railroad (A&S) was chartered in 1838 as the Augusta and Waynesboro Railroad but didn't begin operations until 1854. Two years later in 1856, it changed its name to Augusta and Savannah Railroad. The A&S ran 53 miles (85.3 km) of track between Augusta
