Attymon railway station serves the townland of Attymon in County Galway
. It is the smallest station on the Dublin-Galway line consisting of a single platform with no signalling system or waiting room. The building at the station is boarded up and used as a store for line maintenance crew. The station used to link the Dublin-Galway line with a branch line to Loughrea
but this has been removed, the line having closed in 1975. A former railway preservation group called Westrail had hoped to reopen the line as a tourist line, but failed to do so.
The station once had three platforms in operation. A footbridge over the Galway-Dublin track joining two of the platforms is now in use in one of Dublin city's commuter railway stations. On a weekday, four trains serve Attymon station: an early morning train to Galway at 08:02, a train to Galway at 09:43, a train to Dublin Heuston at 18:27 and a train to Athlone at 22:35. On Sundays, services include a 10:45am train to Galway, a 13:27 train to Dublin Heuston and a 18:27 train to Dublin Heuston.
Residents of Attymon and the surrounding areas have made numerous requests to Iarnród Éireann to stop further trains in Attymon. They have refused to do so. On April 26th, 2011 a protest numbering some two hundred local people took place at the next station to the east, Woodlawn. The local action group is requesting that Iarnród Éireann improve the eastbound service from the station by allowing a morning Galway to Dublin train to serve the station.
Attymon Junction station opened on 1 December 1890.
