After completing their basic training, Israel naval cadets are sent to Atlit naval base for formal training. Although the island is often seen on maps inside Israel, along with other small islands in the Mediterranean such as Turquoise Island, Seagull Island and Nahliel Island, it rarely appears on international maps.

In 2010, Israeli prime minister Benyamin Netanyahu visited the base to salute the commandos who took part in the Gaza flotilla raid
