The police department operates east and west precincts and has established fourteen police zones in the county. The west precinct, headquartered in the Georgia Square Mall

 on Atlanta Highway, is responsible for zones one through seven. The east precinct, housed in police headquarters on Lexington Road, is responsible for zones eight through fourteen. The department's traffic unit operates from a police substation on Baxter Street. The Special Operations unit is based at the Fairview Street substation.

Athens-Clarke County adheres to a community oriented policing model which partners the police department with the community to address and solve community problems.

History

The department previously existed as two separate departments: Athens Police and Clarke County Police. The departments merged when the city and county governments of Athens and Clarke County unified in 1991.
