. The journal seeks to rapidly publish material for current topics, or studies pertaining to new, rapidly developing fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Papers which are determined to have qualified via an editorial review process are given priority, i.e., unpublished results that require timely publication.

Pis’ma v Astronomicheskii Zhurnal is translated in its English version by MAIK Nauka/Interperiodica, which is also the official publisher. However, beginning in 2006 access and distribution outside of Russia is made through Springer. Both English and Russian versions are published simultaneously.

 this journal was established in 1993. Moreover, from 1999, until present day it has produced 12 issues per year. However, prior to this only six issues were published each year, back to 1996. The editor-in-chief is Rashid A. Sunyaev of Space Research Institute, Moscow
