History

The Association was set up in 2001 by members of the Division of Occupational Psychology of the British Psychological Society

 who felt that the Society was too academic in its approach and insufficiently attuned to the practical and fast-moving needs of their organisational clients. The first chair was Dr Brian Baxter.

Character

The Association has around 600 members, mostly in the Principal grade of membership (this is approximately equivalent to chartered status in bodies which hold a Royal Charter

); members are obliged to comply with codes of ethics and professional conduct. It holds each year, generally in the English Midlands, a lively and challenging three-day conference which is addressed by leaders of the profession, and offers members speaker meetings and other CPD events in London and elsewhere. It maintains an attractive website, and has a Business Leaders Forum on which many of the most prominent business psychology firms are represented. In 2005 the ABP sponsored a book entitled Business Psychology in Practice; this was published by Whurr Publishers and edited by Pauline Grant with Sarah Lewis and David Thompson; it celebrated the launch of the ABP and aimed "to give a flavour of the new profession's activities".

Recent events

Priorities for the association in the last couple of years have been the UK Government's decision to regulate
Health Professions Council

many of the psychology professions (in the event, business psychology remains self-regulating), higher education issues, and the expansion of its work for members outside London. The current chair, Steve Whiddett, was elected in November 2009.
